#TshwaneShutdown: Soshanguve residents block busy Hebron Road

Pretoria – Soshanguve residents have blocked the busy Hebron Road with burning tyres and rubble demanding service delivery.

The angry group started stoning numerous vehicles, forcing taxis to make U-turns or park on the side of the road.

They believed the demonstration would send a strong message to the municipality and mayor Steven Mokgalapa who was delivering the State of City Address today.

Protesters said they wanted to send a strong message about the importance of service delivery before the much anticipated May 8 elections.

Street vendors stopped trading when a wave of protesters walked along the Hebron Road approaching the R80 highway.

Stores at the Soshanguve Crossing Shopping Centre subsequently closed their doors and sent workers home to avoid possible looting.

However, the police arrived with Nyalas and started firing rubber bullets to disperse the crowd that was approaching the highway carrying tyres, stones and sticks.

This protest is part of the #TshwaneShutdown demonstrations taking place across the City as part of a move to demonstrate that people were not happy with the City.

The people said they want RDP houses, land to build houses, running water, electricity and were tired of empty promises.
