This month marks 25 years of democracy in South Africa. The country’s first democractic election took place on 27 April 1994.
In the build up to South Africa once again going to the polls on 8 May this year, SABC News invites you on a multimedia journey into the past, taking you back to 1994 with daily highlight videos from 1 March to 27 April of that year, showcased on the corresponding day 25 years later.
The daily video series tracks the hype and political vigor that preceded the historic first-ever democractic elections in South Africa.
The series looks at how local and international citizens rallied behind this momentous occasion, and how the public broadcaster aimed cameras and microphones across the country to document the birth of a new South Africa.
