President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent his condolences to the families of the victims of the floods that hit KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko elaborates:

“The President continues to call on our Emergency Rescue Services to spare no effort in the recovery effort and on society as a whole to support those who may be displaced. The President has also committed to visit Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape during the course of the week.”

President  Ramaphosa is  expected in KwaZulu-Natal  to assess damages caused by the floods. The President is also expected in the Eastern Cape.

Ramaphosa was attending an emergency African Union (AU) Troika Summit convened in Egypt and returned to South Africa on Tuesday night.

At least 51 people are confirmed to have lost their lives in the severe thunderstorms which ravaged several areas of KZN. The Metrorail train services remain suspended.

Parts of the Eastern Cape – especially Port St Johns – have also suffered flooding from the heavy rains.

Three people are reported to have died in the Eastern Cape.
