Highlands Park ended what’s been a fairytale first season back in the top flight on a high with a 2-0 victory over SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday to finish the season in seventh position.
The hosts made three changes in Bongani Khumalo, Jamie Webber and Lungu Ghampani whilst Lesenya Ramoraka and Jabulani Shongwe returned for the visitors.
Evans Rusike should have put United in the lead but missed a clear-cut chance after Aubrey Modiba had intelligently set him up with a swift pass.
Highlands would go on to punish them on the 50th minute when Peter Shalulile finished off a nicely worked move.
Lindokuhle Mbatha’s 81st minute strike sealed the win for The Lions of The North, something that left Highlands’s coach Owen da Gama chuffed.
Highlands returned to the PSL following a two year stint in the National First Division having suffered relegation in their maiden professional season back in 2017.
Da Gama says though he had confidence in his relatively inexperienced yet hungry side, a top 8 berth has certainly exceeded their expectations and expects next season to be a lot tougher.
Despite the defeat, SuperSport United finishes the campaign one position above Highlands on sixth with 44 points.
Matsatsantsa gaffer Kaitano Tembo says he is extremely disappointed his lads couldn’t end off a promising season with a win.
