South Africans are pinning their hopes on Wheelchair Tennis South Africa (WTSA) team to bring home silverware from the prestigious BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Israel.

Represented by three teams of Mens, Women and Quads, SA got off to a great start on Monday when the women’s team defeated Colombia 2-1 in their first tie but lost their doubles rubber 4-6 6-3 4-10.

Individually, Mariska Venter got the ball rolling by easing past Colombia’s Johana Martinez 6-2 6-2. World No 6 ranked Kgothatso Montjane had a tougher time against Angelica Bernal but still pulled through to claim a 6-3, 7-6(5) win. Montjane reflects on their triumphs.

The 2019 edition of the Paribas World Team Cup kicked off on Monday at the Larry and Mary Greenspon Tennis Centre in Ramat Hasharon on the central part of Israel and will run until the 18th of May.

The Paribas Cup is often referred to as the Davis Cup of wheelchair tennis where the initial event took place in California in 1985.

‪Earlier Tuesday the men took to the court with Donald Ramphadi dismantling James Shaw 6-2 6-2 to give the SA quads team a 1-0 lead against Britain but Andy Lapthorne levelled the score at 1-1 after defeating Lucas Sithole 6-0 6-1.

Montjane expects the competition to heat up in the next few days and promises they will emerge victorious against Russia. – Report by Tumi Gabonamong
