Members of a marimba band, which recently won an international music competition, say they’re honoured to have done the African continent proud.
The band, from Glenwood House school in George, represented Africa at the 64th European Music Festival for Young People, in Belgium.
The band competed against 92 instrumental ensembles from 29 countries.
Award winning conductor, Jan-Erik Swart, says it was their originality that won over the judges.
“We very proud of what our marimba band achieved. A first place summa cum laude which was only 9 awards out of a whole group of 92 orchestras. We decided to play an African ethnic mix. We started with Special Star and we did Wima Wa in the jungle, we did Mayimbu, which is a Zambian piece and the European jury loved it,” says Swart.
