Netball South Africa President Cecilia Molokwane says the Spar Proteas Netball National Team is better than Bafana Bafana in terms of rankings.
The Netball team is currently ranked fifth in the world, while Bafana are ranked 14th on the continent and 73rd in the world. Molokwane said this when Netball SA announced a strong team to represent the country at the 2019 World Cup in Liverpool, England.
Netball has made great strides under the leadership of Sports Minister Tokozile Xasa, who has advocated for women sports in the country. It is unclear if Xasa will be retained in her position with many changes expected in the cabinet soon. Molokwane says Xasa did a sterling job for Netball.
Netball has also attracted many sponsors in recent weeks such as Telkom, Twizza and Puma. SAB pulled out of sponsoring the sport late last year. Netball SA will also host the next world cup in 2023. Molokwane is grateful for the financial backing. – Report by Vincent Sitsula
