Imagine walking into a store, selecting an item of your choice and dropping the money into a cash box and leave.
There is no store assistant or cashier. It’s all based on honesty.
Imagine no more, as this has now become a reality. An unmanned pop-up store called The Munching Mongoose is now operating in Melville, Johannesburg.
The store completely relies on your honesty and is the first of its kind in the country.
Store manager Siqgibo Nonhonho says, “What we are doing over here is a little social experiment. We wanted to put the faith back into South Africans by literally putting our money where our mouth is. We decided to come up with this honesty box retail store whereby customers can come in pick their items and drop their money into the box over there or perhaps Snap Scan over here. There’s absolutely no staff member in the store and they free to have their experience uninhibited and walk out with their goods once they are done.”
