The City of Cape Town has allocated millions of rand to upgrade libraries in the city.

A budget of R40 million has been approved for Library and Information Services at a full council meeting.

Mayor Dan Plato says the money will be spent on upgrading several libraries, buying reading material and equipment and for e-resource subscriptions.

More than 300 000 citizens currently make use of the city’s libraries.

Plato says the library’s budget is intended to prioritise learning and recreation.

“There is still a need for libraries. Come and use the library. Come, come and play on the net come and do your homework. Come and do your assignments. Libraries need to be there. It needs to be functional. It needs to be in reach of the public and the more youngsters that can use the libraries the more budge we need to avail.”
