The Mpumalanga Community Safety MEC Gabisile Tshabalala has urged motorists to be cautious on the roads following a crash on the N11 between Middelburg and Hendrina on Friday afternoon.

Nine people were killed when a minibus taxi and a truck collided.

The deceased were all passengers in the minibus taxi. They are believed to have been employees of a nearby mine.

An investigation into the cause of the collision is under way. Both drivers’ sustained minor injuries and were admitted to hospital.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.

Provincial Community Safety, Security and Liaison Department’s spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi , says, “The police are working with the RTM, and Safety and Security from the department are currently investigating the cause of this crash.”

Meanwhile, Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC has sent condolences to the bereaved families. She’s also calling on motorists to use the road with great caution.

In another crash in Western Cape, two people have been killed after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned in Oudtshoorn, Little Karoo.

Provincial Traffic Chief, Kenny Africa, says the vehicle crashed into a barrier and the driver lost control of the car. Two men, both passengers, were killed in the early hours of Saturday morning.
