The rand is trading at R13.99 to the dollar, R17.45 to pound sterling and R15.72 to the euro. The euro is trading at one point twelve dollar and the dollar is at 107.74 Japanese yen.
In Brazil, one dollar is trading at 3.76 real; in Russia at 62.90 roubles; in India at 68.92 rupees; and in China a dollar is changing hands at 6.87 yuan.
In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei closed 2% lower. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined by half a percent, mainland China’s Shanghai Composite index lost 1%, while India’s SENSEX is 0.4% down at the close of trade.
The JSE is mainly higher at midday.
The All Share index has added 0.2% to 57 780, the Industrial 25 index is 0.2% down, the Top 10 Resources index has gained 0.6 % and the gold mining index is 3.2 % higher.
On the capital market, the yield on the R186 government bond is at 7.99 %.
Markets in Europe are lower at this hour.
Britain’s FTSE 100 has shed 0.4%, the CAC 40 in France is 0.6% down and Germany’s DAX has declined by 0.8%.
Looking at commodities, gold is trading at 1421 dollars and platinum at 848 dollars per ounce. The price of Brent crude oil is 63.73 dollars a barrel.
