SABC News Khoisan - University of Western Cape hosts colloquium on indigenous languages

Organisers of a language summit at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) say indigenous languages can play a crucial role in uniting the people of Africa.

The gathering is being attended by learners, student organisations, Khoisan representatives and academics from countries like Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

Organiser, Sibulelo Mokapela, who heads  the Xhosa Department at UWC says the theme of the summit looks at the role of indigenous languages in shaping the future of the African continent.

“We are hoping that through this colloquium, which has been informed by the agenda 2063 of the African Union, we will be able to see beyond the borders that exist on the African continent and work together in unifying Africa and also in terms of socio-economic development of the African continent and African people.”
