The Department of Tourism says it is in the process of developing a safety app to assist distressed tourists visiting the country.
Tourism Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane made the announcement at the launch of a national Tourism Safety Awareness Campaign at Table Mountain in Cape Town.
The app is expected to be launched in December.
The department also announced the deployment of tourism safety monitors to all major attractions across the country soon.
Kubayi-Ngubane says they are engaging with the business sector to implement a safety model that includes the use of drones.
The Minister met with tourism stakeholders at Hazyview in Mpumalanga, this week, to discuss the sector’s problems. Crime has been identified as one of the main challenges.
Three weeks ago, nine tourists were robbed near White River. Kubayi-Ngubane says her department is engaging with other departments to assist in curbing crime in the sector.
