South Africa made it a hat-trick of COSAFA Women’s Championship titles when they defeated Zambia with a sole goal in the senior women’s final in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

Tiisetso Makhubela scored the only goal of the game in the 22nd minute, capitalising on a spillage by the Zambian goalkeeper of a Mamello Makhabane set-piece.

Unfortunately, Makhubela did not finish the match as she was stretchered off and taken to the hospital.

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis knows her side could have done better in the game however adds that overall she has been impressed with the squad especially the debutants. Midfielder Noxolo Cesane, who scored on debut against Malawi, was among the stand-outs for the coach at the tournament.

Meanwhile this was Zambia’s only loss in the two-week-long event however they got their first silver medal at the tournament.

Coach Beauty Mwamba says her team did their best, adding they put up a good fight against an experienced side.

The coach says the fact that the Copper Queens and their Under 20 girls reached the finals of their respective tournaments shows growth.

Mwamba further speaks of leagues in different regions in her country and how they are helping with keeping girls active.

The coach also cites the milestones the senior team has reached in recent years as positive signs of development of women’s football in Zambia.
