The South African Human Rights Commission will on Friday lodge a complaint against Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth at the Equality Court. The rugby player is accused of racially abusing and assaulting a fellow patron at a pub in Langebaan in the Western Cape in August.

The alleged incident took place only weeks before Etzebeth was set to board a plane for the Rugby World Cup in Japan. Media reports say Human Rights Commissioner Chris Nissen and the commission’s Buang Jones will be in Langebaan to collect outstanding statements and address the community on the matter on Thursday.

Nissen says since Etzebeth is in Japan for the Rugby World Cup, the commission will exercise great caution in its handling of the matter.

Etzebeth has since denied the allegations.
