A revival of Peter Shaffer’s classic 70s play, “Equus”, in Cape Town has put the controversial theatre piece under the spotlight once again since its last staging in the Mother City 20-years-ago.

The new version of the British author’s cult play, known for nudity, sex and violence towards horses, boasts Graham Hopkins and Sven Ruygrok in the leads, under the direction of Fred Abrahamse.

It also premieres at Montecasino in Jo’burg at the end of April.

The first local staging of Equus, regarded as one of the most acclaimed plays of all time, dates back to 1973 when South Africa hosted a production of the Royal National Theatre from London that caused an uproar.

It also posed challenges to the conservative censor board at the time.
